In a single sentence, Lili Reinhart read the entire segment of the population that started chasing sourdough starter and reading up on proofing in the last few months. “It’s so weird to me that America’s response to a quarantine is to bake bread,” she tells ELLE.com. Other phenomena from self-isolation are less perplexing: Her skin is thriving despite relaxed maintenance, and like many others, she is feeling the pull of places outside big cities. And while she might not be baking bread, Reinhart does have something to show from quarantine: She’s the new face of CoverGirl’s Clean Fresh Collection.
Reinhart knows a thing or two about makeup—she’s done her own for Riverdale and Hustlers. Since she was named CoverGirl spokeswoman back in December, she’s tested several new products launching from the line. She’s currently obsessed with the hydrating moisturizer and setting spray.
Oh, and in the end, Reinhart did get a homemade loaf of bread, courtesy of Riverdale castmate Wyatt Nash. It was delicious. Below, the actress talks selfies, beauty in quarantine, and why she’s enjoying her time alone.
Tell me about the new Covergirl launch. Why are you excited for this collection?
Maybe this is just me, but there are a lot of celebrity endorsements that seem a little forced—the match seems forced. But I was blown away to be chosen to be a Covergirl, and the fact that they wanted me to represent their Clean Fresh line was icing on the cake. That’s my philosophy when it comes to makeup: very natural, very dewy, and fresh and light. I like a makeup line that allows your skin to breathe.
It’s a very natural partnership and I love talking about it. I was sent the new Clean Fresh product, like the setting spray, which I love. It has a cucumber scent and smells really good. I spray it on my face a couple times a day. I’m also really excited about the hydrating concealer—I feel like it’s going to be a major staple in my makeup bag from now on, because my under-eyes get dry really easily.
What’s your beauty routine in quarantine?
I have to remind myself to exfoliate and do masks. Because I’m not wearing a lot of makeup right now, my skin is doing pretty well. Then, I step outside and look in the mirror up close and I’m like, “Oh God, I need to exfoliate.” When I’m not forced to be doing my makeup every day, staring at my face in a mirror, and doing touch-ups on set, I don’t prioritize my skin as much. I’m definitely still a fanatic about cleansing and washing my face when I wake up and when I go to bed, but I’ve had to remind myself to go the extra mile and do a nice face mask. I have to be a little bit more disciplined, but I’m not complaining.
Have you learned any beauty tricks from the set of Riverdale or Hustlers?
Jules is our amazing head of makeup on Riverdale, but it’s kind of amazing to do my own makeup on Riverdale because I don’t have to pay for any of the makeup, which is so wonderful. I get to try out a lot of different products like primers and eyeshadow palettes. And it’s fun because the girls are always around me. Madelaine [Petsch] is doing her makeup and Cami [Mendes] is getting her makeup done. It’s an interesting process because what works for Cami’s skin is not going to work for mine, but [I get] to see different techniques and learn from them. I’ve become a lot more confident in my makeup skills.
I let the makeup artists do my makeup on the first day of Hustlers, but it gave me anxiety because it wasn’t the way I wanted it. So the next day, I texted the director, “Would you mind if I did my own makeup?” And I’m sure she was kind of scared because she had no idea and was thinking, Oh God, what is this girl going to do to her face? In order for me to feel more comfortable I would want to do my own makeup, so I did.
What are your tips for taking the perfect selfie?
If I’m going out of my way to take a selfie, I will probably do a little more highlighter than I normally would so it catches in the picture. Yesterday, I did a few pictures that I have to send for interviews and I used the Cooling Glow Stick from the line. It’s a really soft texture and I rub my ring finger on it and dab on my cheekbones. It picks up the light really well and makes your skin look dewy. In pictures, I’m all about the dewy skin but it’s a toss-up because you might look a little greasy in real life. So dewy is perfect for pictures.
But if I’m in bad lighting, I’m not going to take the picture. Forget it. I’m lucky I have good lighting where I am right now but it still takes a good five minutes to figure out what works.

Who are your beauty influences?
Since I was a teen, I loved watching Michelle Phan on YouTube. She was the first guru I loved. She doesn’t do YouTube anymore but she’s a skin goddess. Beauty-wise, I’ve been saying Elle Fanning a lot. I love how she keeps everything so natural and you can always see her skin. Everything is so youthful and that’s what I try to do in my own makeup. I also think Margot Robbie has a really cool and beautiful look.
What have you been doing in self-isolation?
I’ve been reading and writing and I just went on a girl’s trip with my friends to the desert to get out of L.A. because we were both going a little crazy. We’ve all tested negative so we went to a place and got away from everything. It was lovely.
I’m enjoying the peace and quiet of being alone a little bit. I mean, I don’t want to be doing this for the next five months, but I am trying to take advantage of it because I don’t get it often. I’m really taking care of myself and focusing on myself.
